Pay for A Place

for Open Book

£1770.00 + £361.25 Gift Aid = £2131.25
Donated to Pay for A Place’s £2500.00 Goal

Each year Open Book takes as many of its readers as it can to a literary experience - for some that's a visit to a book festival for others an author visit to their group. This year we expect to have requests from between 400 - 450 members to attend Edinburgh and Wigtown Book Festivals. We support our members with tickets, transport, lunch and where funds allow a book. Our Pay A Place appeal will raise funds for those outings.

This year we're asking for your help to be able to say YES to all the requests for places that come in.

Here's what your donation could do:

£10 supports a ticket to an event and a provides coffee/cake

£25 provides a ticket, lunch and a book

Thank you - for many of our readers the annual outing a highlight of their year "A Day To Treasure" as one of our readers put it last year.

All funds raised will be passed to Open Book irrespective of whether our appeal target is reached, not reached or exceeded. If funds are being raised for a specific purpose and, for whatever reason, this purpose is no longer valid, the funds will be transferred to the charity for general use.

The charity

Open Book runs shared reading and creative writing groups in lots of community settings. Using literature as a tool to connect people and build communities, sessions are facilitated by an Open Book trained Lead Reader and run very much like a traditional book group EXCEPT all the reading is done aloud. That means that there is no preparation and no homework. It also means those who struggle to read - if their eyesight is failing as they grow older, or because they never learner to read or perhaps don't have English as a first language - can still join in. Our creative writing sessions use the work that has been read to spark the writing of those who attend. With around 100 sessions each month taking place in 45 different locations (from Orkney to Stranraer and lots in between), the demand for groups has been growing rapidly since 2013 when the first two groups were established and shows no sign of diminishing.

Each year we give a many of our readers as we can the opportunity to attend a literary event - whether that's a visit to a book festival or a reading by an author. In 2019 we anticipate we will take around 300 members to the Edinburgh International Book Festival in August with a further 150 attending Wigtown book Festival with Open Book in September.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
