Our MMTA Charity, Friends of Mufulira (FOM), arises out of The Minor Metals Trade Association’s wish to publicly recognize the communities in developing countries upon which we all depend on for the supply of metals.
Mufulira, on the copperbelt in Zambia, offered itself via the personal links that some members of the MMTA had with this town. Other regions and places could have been chosen, but in Mufulira we were able to build on links already established in the mind of our community and it was also felt that concentrating resources on one place would have the greatest beneficial impact. Mufulira is therefore a symbol for all mining towns that lie at the start of the long supply chain that brings metals out of the ground to start their long journey towards their final and, sometimes astonishing, applications.
The Friends of Mufulira charitable goals are to promote the education and health of people in the Mufulira community. Friends of Mufulira aims to achieve these goals through fundraising for necessary medical and school equipment along with understanding what the needs are for the local Mufulira community.
The MMTA has set up a medical elective programme which sends two or three NHS trainee doctors to the Ronald Ross General Hosptial in Mufulira each year. It is a link from which both sides continue to prosper and we hope in future years to build on this programme with some reciprocity, so that Zambian doctors or nurses can travel to the UK for study. The MMTAs links could not have been built up or grown without the help and support of the community of people in Somerset UK, who had built their own personal links between schools and hospitals dating back to the mid 1990.
If you'd like to run, swim, bake (or do anything else to raise some money), click the button below to get started. It's quick and easy to register and by doing so here at Wonderful.org, you can be sure that every penny raised will reach Friends of Mufulira.
We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.
We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.
We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
