About Maru a Pula Trust

The Maru a Pula Trust aims to raise funds for orphan and vulnerable childrens' scholarships at Maru a Pula School in Botswana. Maru a Pula is a top independent, academically selective secondary school in Gaborone, Botswana's capital, with a strong emphasis on community service. Maru-a-Pula means ‘Clouds of Rain’ in Setswana (the official language of Botswana) and in a semi-desert country like Botswana rain is considered a blessing.

In Botswana, there are around 120 000 orphans (Unicef 2012) in a population of just over 2 million. Many of these orphans lack opportunities for good schooling, so we seek to provide opportunities through an orphan and vulnerable children (OVC) scholarship fund at Maru a Pula School. The school currently has 19 fully funded OVCs at a cost of £13000 per scholar per year. Previous scholars have gone on to prestigious US,UK and South African Universities to become leaders of the future.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
