About Orwell Panthers Athletics Club

Orwell Panthers is an England Athletics registered club for people of all ages, physical, and mental abilities to train, practice and compete in the sport of athletics in Suffolk.

We have approximately 30 athletes in the club who train together up to twice per week at Northgate High School in Ipswich. The main events that we focus on are:

  • running (from 60m to 800m),
  • throws - discus, shot-put, javelin, bean bag toss
  • jumping events - standing long jump, long jump, high jump

The approach to all of these events is tailored to each athlete's specific abilities, including for wheelchairs and visually impaired athletes, which enables each person to work towards their own personal challenges and learn new abilities within themselves through sport.

The team competes in local, regional and national competitions through out the summer and we often compete representing the county of Suffolk at Special Olympics events against teams from across the country. With the assistance of a team of dedicated volunteer coaches, Orwell Panther athletes often achieve new 'personal bests' at competitions, exemplifying the real benefits of being part of a team and working hard to achieve something. Not only that, we also make friends and have a lot of fun while we are at it!

As a small volunteer-run charity, every penny is valued. We have ongoing costs such as renting the track and purchasing new equipment, and we have started a significant effort to fundraise to send some of our athletes to the Special Olympics taking place in Liverpool in 2021.

A little bit of financial support goes a long way to support these brilliantly inspiring athletes in Suffolk.

Thank you for your support!

Jenny runs (unofficial) London Marathon!!!

Help! I am running 42km through the middle of the night around London and the only thing that will motivate me to get through it all is your hard earned cash!!
Along with a hoard of other bitter runners that did not secure their place in the official event, I will be running the course of the London marathon, from finish line to start line in the night before the official event begins. There will be additional challenges with this such as cars, buses, carrying my own water and snacks and mainly resisting stopping for a chat with the intoxicated city-dwellers remaining on the streets in the early hours.
Seriously, this is a long way to go and with an injury to my knee knocking back training efforts, it is a particularly daunting task. The motivation is to support many of my friends who are athletes with the Orwell Panthers. This is an athletics club for people with disabilities that I have been coaching at for the past two years and is full of some of the most determined and inspiring individuals out there. At the club, we dedicate a lot of time and energy in to athletics training but most importantly working on personal goals and wellbeing - and funnily enough this also ends up being a lot of fun!We are a tiny charity in comparison to most, but we have a huge impact in the lives of our athletes and our Suffolk-based community of positive and determined people. We have bills to pay, new equipment dreams and most significantly (in the financial sense) want to help send some of our athletes to the 2021 Special Olympics in Liverpool. It seems a long way off but with lots of funds to raise, we are starting now!
Please be generous in supporting me on this mission and supporting the Orwell Panthers.Don't miss out on your chance to contribute to our first ever event using online fundraising too!
Many many thanks in advance if you choose to donate.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
