The Capacity Foundation is working intensively with a community of 4000 families in the Malenga Mzoma traditional authority area in northern Malawi. The aim is no less than to break the cycle of dependency resulting from intermittent and patchy aid programmes. Aid does a lot of good, but it isn't sustainable and the community needs to take control of its own destiny. The programme involves extending small loans to people to start and grow small businesses. Every loantaker completes a business skills and marketing course first and is continually mentored through the ten-month loan repayment period. Recognising that families have to pull together, the Foundation's loan programme is open to both women and men. People accessing the course must be literate and numerate, so the Foundation runs adult literacy and numeracy classes to maximise participation.
The loans programme involves a service fee that goes towards the Foundation's local overheads and funds a Social Action Fund under the control of the community, which is reserved for projects the community chooses.
The Foundation also runs a farm methods improvement project: about a quarter of the families survive on subsistence farming.
Malenga Mzoma is one of the poorest areas in one of the poorest districts in one of sub-Saharan Africa's poorest countries. The aim is to make the area self-sufficient within a decade.

The Co-operative Bank are proud to be the main sponsorship partner of the Wonderful Organisation supporting charities to make a difference by ensuring 100% of donations go directly to doing good. Learn more about the Bank’s values and ethics.
We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.
We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.
We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
