Charlotte’s story

Hello Everyone,

This year for my birthday instead of gifts I would like to help raise a little bit of money for a great local charity that supports people with substance addiction, social isolation and mental health and wellbeing. It is a small organisation that runs on the kindness of volunteers, donations, grants and fundraising events. They provide a number of activities throughout the week to help people get their life back on track, obtain new interests and have therapeutic time to rebuild self confidence. Every little helps with an organisation like this, even a £1 would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Charlotte xx

All funds raised will be passed to the charity irrespective of whether my target is reached, not reached or exceeded.

Hope Springs Recovery Centre

Hope Springs Recovery Centre is a Drop-In Centre aimed to support people in recovery from substance addiction and mental health problems including PTSD. The centre has in existence for over six years after being established by a local priest who was concerned about the limited support provided by statutory services to help people in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. All too often people who had been through a detox or rehabilitation process were falling back into addiction. Drug counselling by local services was often limited to six sessions and then people were on their own. Without continuous support from services many people ended up relapsing.

Hope Springs is not a religious organisation. It aims to provide unlimited, non-judgemental, on-going support for anyone who wishes to maintain their recovery. The support we offer involves activities such as art & craft, cycling, allotment, walking, cookery, fishing, music and more. In addition to physical activities Hope Springs offers peer led meditation sessions and relapse awareness sessions. By way of incentive and acknowledgement, Hope Springs also provides hot breakfasts on Mondays and Fridays for clients and volunteers who have been involved in activities. We assist homeless people with help to find accommodation and we direct them to appropriate local services for additional support where applicable.

Drop-in Centre

Our Drop-in centre is open Mon – Fri from 10am to 4pm and this is the hub from which all our activities begin. The centre has a footfall of around 300 each month. Over the last year or so Hope Springs has worked with local charity ‘Rethink Mental Illness’ to offer group sessions for people with mental health problems. We also have a strong relationship with Forces on Line and some ex-service personnel recovering from PTSD attend our centre and help with our activities. Addictions and mental health problems go hand in hand and Hope Springs aims to provide hope and a place of welcome and understanding to all who can benefit from our services.

Addiction and mental health issues can affect any family at any time regardless of education or background. Statutory services are good but sometimes extra support is required when people are vulnerable and have nowhere to turn and no scheduled appointment. Regular social interaction and involvement in activity often brings clients through periods of depression, temptation and vulnerability. For some clients a little place of sanctuary can foster a sense of purpose, improve self-esteem, give hope and encouragement to keep going.

There are no salaried staff and Hope Springs is run exclusively by volunteers. Some of our volunteers have had personal experience of the difficulties faced by people trying to achieve recovery and are aware of the effect on families.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
