Team Newton’s story

In January 2020, we are travelling to Cambodia with a team of about 12 people organised by the charity Mission Direct, to join in with the work they are doing on the outskirts of Phnom Penh.

David will be part of the main building team, helping local builders to build 'forever' homes for families forced to relocate because of government slum clearances.

Paula will be part of the smaller medical team, and is likely to be involved in training local health workers in palliative care, taking part in school health promotion, and teaching nursing students, among other things!

We will also be visiting a number of schools and community projects which Mission Direct have developed links with over the 12 years during which they have been working in the area. In addition we will be meeting some of the local partners who live and work in these communities, and provide continuity, in-country relationships, and local knowledge for the projects which Mission Direct support.

Our fundraising is solely towards the costs of materials and resources for the work we are supporting. For the house building this will go towards:

  • Employing local labour
  • Bricks, mortar and cement
  • Scaffolding
  • Paint
  • Tools

We are fully covering all of our own costs, so every pound we raise will go towards the project. If you are able to make a donation, however large or small, it will make a real 'bricks and mortar' difference in providing safe, solid, permanent homes for families within a supportive community.

Thanks!

David and Paula

All funds raised will be passed to the charity irrespective of whether my target is reached, not reached or exceeded.

Mission Direct

Building hope, bringing change

Mission Direct enables everyday people to make a practical and lasting difference to some of the world's most vulnerable people. We do this by making long-term commitments to our carefully-chosen partners in-country and equipping volunteers to join us for a 2-week overseas mission trip to build homes, schools/classrooms, hospitals and rescue centres etc. The impact you have and how much your time means to the local people, will change you forever!

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
