Friends of Portland Works’s story
Portland Works is a grade 2* listed building that has been sadly neglected for over 50 years despite its many special features and the place where the first stainless steel cutlery was made.Friends of Portland Works aim to attract donations from private individuals, commercial companies and charitable organisations that can be used for the necessary upgrading work, so the structure is sound, the building meets current standards and it can continue as a place of work.
Opened in 1879, the building is one of the last remaining working examples of a purpose-built metal trades factory. Since 2013 it has been owned by Portland Works Little Sheffield Ltd, an Industrial and Provident Society that lets work-space at affordable rents to small businesses. Now around 50 people work there, and there is a waiting list of potential new tenants. A strong ethos of ‘making’ among the tenant community reflects the history of the works. All your donations go straight to this amazing project, keeping an important piece of industrial heritage alive.
If you are a private individual paying income tax, we can increase your donation by 25 per cent through Gift Aid. The process is very straightforward via our Wonderful page. Thanks so much for your generosity.
