George’s story

Whilst having an early midlife crisis I have decided I want to complete an Ironman Triathlon before I turn 40. 2019 was meant to be the year!! But my health decided to mess me around leaving me unable to train (or do much else).

So I will be embarking on a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run in 2020 and hoping to become a 'Ironman'.

As part of a build up to that I will also be doing some 'training events'

1) Manchester Marathon on Sunday 7th April 2019

2) Leeds Half Marathon on Sunday 12th May 2019

3) Sundowner Half Ironman Triathlon on Saturday 31st August 2019

More will be added

I am running for a new fund which is being established which is dedicated to improving mental health through sport and physical activity. The fund will look to provide training to providers of sport and support delivery of activity aimed at those with mental health issues.

All funds raised will be passed to the charity irrespective of whether my target is reached, not reached or exceeded.

North Yorkshire Sport Limited

North Yorkshire Sport LTD are a charity and our mission is to 'drive positive change through sport and physical activity'. We impact on people and place, tackling inactivity and improving health and wellbeing outcomes as well as societal, economic and environmental outcomes.

Our fundraising is to use the power of sport and physical activity to improve mental wellbeing.

We will spend proceeds from the fund helping local providers of sport and physical activity with mental health awareness training to better identify and support those suffering poor mental health. We will also be seeking to fund projects to help those working with people with mental health issues to be more physically active. We’re also open to your ideas and suggestions - especially if you are working in this space and need help to get a new project off the ground.

How does physical activity improve mental health?

Physical activity and sport can improve mental health in many ways. Sport England’s strategy ‘Towards an Active Nation’ cites mental wellbeing as one of the five key outcomes, and they have also collated all the supporting evidence if you want to read more.

Key benefits:

  • Improved mood
  • Reduced stress
  • Better self esteem
  • Managing depression & anxiety symptoms

We would love to have you on board as one of our fundraisers and help to support the mental wellbeing of residents of North Yorkshire.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
