Team Northumbria University ’s story
Tuesday 10th September is World Suicide Prevention Day, this is an awareness day observed on 10 September every year, in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides. Over 800,000 people die by suicide annually, representing 1 person every 40 seconds.
We want to raise awareness here at Northumbria about this and have several initiatives running such as, a workshop delivered by MIND which provides a whistle-stop of suicide awareness to help colleagues understand the prevalence of suicide, the risk factors for suicide and helping colleagues to understand how to speak to a person who is feeling suicidal.
We are keen to help support a local charity ‘If U Care Share Foundation’, based in Chester le Street, Co Durham who deliver a range of services which are fundamental to its 3 main objectives – the prevention, intervention & support of those affected by suicide. On the day we would like to support their 'Inside Out' campaign through fundraising by asking colleagues to dress down and wear an item of clothing ‘inside out’ as the campaign itself encourages people to talk – Never underestimate the power of a conversation as you have the power to save a life – there is always a way!
We will also be holding a raffle with prizes confirmed so far from: As You Like It, Sambucas, Motel One, South Lakes Safari Zoo, Pink Boutique, The Face House and The Alnwick Garden to name just a few. Raffle ticket books will be held on each floor in Pandon Building by the following people: Stef Pendleton (Ground Floor), Kerri Booth (First Floor) and Marc Bayles (Second Floor). For those Great British Bake Off Fans (or those who just like cake in general!) we will also be holding a Bake Sale so please bring in your cakes or pastries to your respective kitchens whether homemade or shop bought. All money raised will go to If U Care Share Foundation.
