James’s story

Its about time I did something for someone other than myself....... I've often thought this but have never put it into action.... Until now!

On October 12th this year I will run my very first half marathon and all in aim of a great cause.

When I decided that I should try running constantly for 2 hours (and then probably another hour of crawling) I wondered who I could help. Having been born with a harelip myself I have always counted myself lucky that I had the full might of the NHS to make sure that I could live a perfectly normal life. In many countries this is not the case and children can suffer and struggle without the required care and medical attention. So what better cause could I find than a charity that support nations around the world to develop their own quality of care for a child that, but for the good grace of the place I was born could have been me.

Not only is it those children in other countries that I think about but now also my own child due just 6 days before I run this silly 13.3 miles through some rather nice scenery. It turns out that the causes of cleft lip and palette are still not we known!!!!!! and you only find out at a 20 week scan whether your has this condition or not. surely we should know what cause this by now, its only biology ;) CLEFT do a lot of great work in supporting research into the cause and the treatment of clefts which needs to continue to allow 1 of the many worries for would be parents to be removed.

all that remains to be said is please donate! (and also make sure you check the gift aid box)

All funds raised will be passed to the charity irrespective of whether my target is reached, not reached or exceeded.

CLEFT is a charity focused on providing permanent, sustainable ways to improve cleft care in both the UK and overseas. Supporting a variety of projects we are helping improve the lives of people born with clefts in many different ways. Broadly these can be described in two categories:

  1. We sponsor research projects in the UK, helping to identify the likely causes of clefts, and to find ways in which to improve the treatment and outcomes for children born with a cleft.
  2. We also undertake projects in emerging market countries to support local medical teams to provide long-term treatment and care for people born with clefts. We do this by providing practical teaching in cleft surgery techniques, education on how to provide integrated cleft care, and occasionally vital equipment.

Overall our aim is to improve patient outcomes in the UK and help develop sustainable cleft care systems in countries where they are currently lacking. The emphasis on skill and knowledge transfer means that our overseas projects can develop and grow organically, changing the lives of tens of thousands of adults and children who otherwise would be left disfigured and unable to play a normal role in their society.

Registered Charity Number: 1119630.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
