Timothy’s story

Every 2 minutes someone receives the devastating news they have cancer. There were an estimated 2.5 million people living with cancer in the UK in 2015 and this number is expected to rise to 4 million by 2030.

Almost 2 in 3 Brits have a family member or close friend with cancer. Worryingly around a third of people do not feel confident about providing the person or people they know with cancer with emotional support .

The Acorn Cancer Support Group’s aim is to help alleviate the physical and emotional distress of cancer patients and their carers.

It is expected that the London Marathon will reach £1bn in fundraising this year! Please sponsor me to run 26.2 miles providing the Acorn Cancer Support Group with a percentage of this total. The full total gathered on this website goes to this charity.

Every little donation will help.

The Acorn Cancer Support Group

Distress alleviation of cancer patients and their carers -FY 2018/19

Acorn serves adults affected by any type of cancer. It draws membership from communities in and around St Ives, Huntingdon and Ramsey. Meetings are held monthly in the three towns, on different days, allowing members choice of location. Meetings offer the opportunity for mutual support with new friends who understand, and to have a free relaxation therapy and free refreshments. This is complemented by free social outings and meals, including Christmas and Spring lunch, boat trips and a film club.

Why they need our service

Acorn's mission is to alleviate the physical and emotional distress of adult cancer patients and their carers. It has been doing this for the past 20 years. Diagnosis can be a real shock to the whole family. In between treatments can feel on their own, not knowing what to say to each other. Friends may not know what to say either. Unless addressed this can lead to stress, clinical depression and withdrawal. Our support meetings and social outings offset this and enhance quality of their life.

Plan and expected results

In a typical year we have a total attendance of some 1000 people our meetings. Of these some 70% are patients and carers, the balance are our support team of volunteers and therapists. We will provide over 200 free therapies and over 200 opportunities to take place in collective seated exercise. In the last year we provided nearly 600 individual places on social outings. We will aim to achieve all of these again in the coming year. As everything we offer is at no-cost to our members, this is why we fund raise and need your help

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
