Amanda’s story

I am running the London Marathon in 2020. From a 5km runner to a marathon will be one of my biggest challenges.

However, a far bigger challenge was when in October 2018 my daughter was diagnosed with an extremely rare blood disorder: ITP. She developed shocking bruises, and after a blood test check we were called into A&E where we were met by two very concerned consultants at 10pm on a Friday night. Her immune system attacked her platelets. A part of the blood that I had previously given little attention to! (This has since been rectified and I can now wax lyrical about platelets!) It was a terrifying time for us all.

Thankfully, she is now back in full health, but I would love to raise some money to support this amazing charity, which is so small that hardly anyone has heard it! Wonderful.org takes 0 fees and 100% of your donations will go towards the ITP Association so they can provide others with the same support as they gave to all of us.

All funds raised will be passed to the charity irrespective of whether my target is reached, not reached or exceeded.

The ITP Support Association

The ITP Support Association is the sole UK registered charity supporting and representing the interests of patients, and the families of patients, with Immune Thrombocytopenia (formerly known as Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura), and funding research into the causes and best management of ITP.

The ITP Support Association was formed in 1995 to provide information and a support network for adults, and parents of children, with ITP.

Immune Thrombocytopenia is a frightening rare bleeding disorder in which the body’s immune system destroys platelets in the blood. Unlike autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and MS it is not progressive as the risk of bleeding exists from the day the disease develops. It can arise in anyone at any age, and affects three to four thousand adults and children in the UK. Its symptoms vary from one sufferer to another but include nose bleeds, mouth blisters, heavy periods, large multi colour bruises, petechiae, fatigue and, on rare occasions, internal bleeding. Treatments, which all have their dangers and drawbacks, are not always effective in raising the platelet count, and only rarely cure the disease.

Registered Charity Number: 1064480.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
