Peter’s story

Hello wonderful friends and colleagues. I am honoured to have a Launceston Roadrunners club ballot place to run in my sixth marathon as I approach the start of my sixth decade.

I am not a natural runner.... I find the training very tough and often suffer varying degrees of race cramping! So I need to tough it out. It helps when I consider why.

  1. It hugely helps my own health - mental and physical - and keeps me grounded
  2. I want to do my bit to inspire a new generation of runners in Kabwe, Zambia. I hosted the first Sports Day last year and the second one is in July.
  3. I want to make my club proud by doing my very best.
  4. I want to raise as much money as possible for a charity which I helped found. We educate and feed about 1,000 highly vulnerable children in Zambia. It's deeply rewarding but also stressful trying to find new ways of raising £100,000 here in the UK.

All funds raised will be passed to the charity irrespective of whether my target is reached, not reached or exceeded.

Future Pillars (Zambia)

Future Pillars (Zambia) is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered in June 2017 number 1173534. We are building on the valuable work started by the CONTESA Charity since 2005 when that charity began to support AIDS orphans in Zambia.  FPZ stated objectives are to advance education, relieve poverty and promote and protect good health for the public benefit of children in Zambia who are socially and economically disadvantaged. Our mission is to empower vulnerable children (many of whom are orphans) by providing food, education and vocational skills training. Where necessary and affordable we will also offer basic housing. FPZ will continue to support the existing programmes at Kabwe, where over 1,000 children and young people are currently receiving food, education and skills training in order to move from poverty to a better and sustainable future for themselves and their families. Some have already achieved that goal and become qualified teachers, electricians, carpenters and so on. This needs to continue. The children are there, the need is great, how can we let them down? FPZ pledges that 100% of donations will go directly and only for the support of the children in the programmes. We work as volunteers from home and cover administrative and travelling costs ourselves.

Registered Charity Number: 1173534.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
