SPEAR’s story

Thank you very much for supporting our swimmers in this year's Richmond Borough Swimathon organised by the Rotary Club of Twickenham.

Our Mission: To enable homeless people in South and West London to find secure accommodation and work towards a positive future.

SPEAR’s was founded over 30 years ago when two rough sleepers died by the River Thames.

Starting with a 14 bed hostel, last year SPEAR verified over 120 rough sleepers.

Believing that accommodation is only the start of addressing homelessness SPEAR have various teams addressing the various needs that either led to or were caused by life on the streets.

This includes a Skills & Development Team helping clients build self-esteem, gain valuable qualifications and gain employment, a Healthlink Team ensuring they get access to the health services they are entitled to, and a Peer Mentoring scheme where clients can work to help others.

SPEAR’s goal is for our clients to become truly independent and break the cycle of homelessness.

Rotary Club of Twickenham Trust Fund

The Rotary Club of Twickenham was founded in 1925 and raises thousands of pounds every year for local, national and international charities and voluntary organisations. This event has been running annually for more than ten years and has raised in excess of £60,000. The way the swimathon works is that 70% of the sponsorship money raised by each team goes to the team’s nominated charity. The balance of 30% is used by the Rotary Club of Twickenham to support many great local and international charities (A list of charities supported each year is displayed on the club’s website).

All club members are volunteers and every penny it raises is donated to charity. Twickenham Rotarians also volunteer their time and skills to organise projects promoting the achievements of young people and coordinating educational programmes.

Around the world, there are 1.2 million Rotarians in 34,000 clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas committed to “Service Above Self”. Rotary is in the unique position of being able to reach people in need all over the world, from running life-changing projects in developing countries to making an immediate response to disaster-hit regions. Rotarians volunteer in communities at home and abroad to support education, provide clean water, combat hunger, and to improve health and sanitation.

Rotarians foster acquaintance and fellowship as an opportunity for service. They advocate the maintenance of high ethical standards in business and professions, and apply the ideal of service in their personal, business and community lives.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
