Storage to house the 1000s of books for Just be a Child

£40.00 + £10.00 Gift Aid = £50.00
Donated to Lenka’s £8000.00 Goal

Lenka’s story

JBAC has fantastic results inspiring Kenyan children to read, and your book donations are so useful in achieving this. We are increasing the number of libraries we build each year and books are arriving at an ever increasing rate, which is fantastic BUT we can't cope unless we build more storage. Please help us build this urgently needed facility!

From 7,000 books and 2,000 other items in 2015 to 45,000 books and 10,000 other items such as furniture, toys and stationery in 2019. From 1 library per year to 3 a year is amazing growth.

Dollimore and Christie have helped us tremendously by donating 2 static containers for storage. But the books keep on coming. Month after month. And the containers are just not enough any more.

Dollimore and Christie have now generously given us land to build a warehouse with shelving to store and organise the books. It will also keep our volunteers dry and comfortable, as we sort donations all year round.

We need £10,000 by April, otherwise we will have to stop accepting book donations which as you can imagine will have a direct impact on our ability to build libraries. Please help us continue to make good use of all potential donations!

All funds raised will be passed to the charity irrespective of whether my target is reached, not reached or exceeded.

Just be a Child

We inspire Kenyan children to read by building free, community run libraries and learning centres. We collect books, learning material and more in the UK load it all into a 40ft container and ship it to Kenya.

There the container is converted, by the local community, into the library. The shelves are filled with 5,000 books, toys and games and learning material too. The rest, almost 25,000 books gets donated to schools, orphanages and other partners. The libraries are run by fully trained community volunteers.

To ensure continuous engagement we also run various sessions. Our most popular are arts and crafts sessions and sport days. Our playground is a real hit too. We work with the community on providing motivational and educational talks on subjects ranging from health, to safe sex, to starting and running a business. And we run our ever-growing Young Writer competition.

We have built 3 libraries so far but have great ambitions to build at least 30 by 2030. With your help of course.

A small, yet fast growing charity, Just be a Child uses some innovative but, by now, tried and tested techniques for community engagement.

We have incredible long-lasting results. Some we've expected such as 1,200 members of each library, 250 active visitors each month, and 60 children attending our arts and crafts sessions to name but a few. Others we did not. The main unexpected result is that teachers from nearby schools come and learn from our librarians, even from the children themselves.

Our work is deeply community driven and depends on the enthusiasm and initiative of our volunteers, both in the UK and in Kenya. We also believe that we assist the Kenyan communities in finding ways to education, better futures and happier childhood, but they have to do the work.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
