Tom’s story

Everyone the world over knows of the big church in Salisbury - the one with the 123 metre high spire. But just round the corner is another church: smaller, older, part hidden, home to a wonderful choir - and desperately in need of support to ensure its wonderful mediaeval structure stays standing in its little corner of our city for years to come.

Meanwhile, a small boy got a bike, and there is no holding him back. So we are off for our first big adventure, along the Wylye valley. We'll have fun I'm sure, but if you can help support the Quest2020 appeal as well, that would be so much better!

All funds raised will be passed to the charity irrespective of whether my target is reached, not reached or exceeded.

St Thomas's Church Salisbury

St Thomas's is the parish church of the beautiful city of Salisbury in the southwest of England. It is thought that a church has stood on or near to this site for over 800 years and we continue this unbroken tradition of serving God in the heart of the city.

Our Quest 2020 Appeal was launched in January 2018 to raise £2million to repair, renovate and renew our church building for its continuing mission to the city of Salisbury and the wider community.

This is a huge task and includes:

• our famous 15th century doom painting – the largest in England – whose plaster is unstable and is lifting from its base;

• our beautiful medieval clerestory whose stone has deteriorated and become porous and in danger of collapse;

• our stone and wood block flooring that has in parts become a worn, broken and uneven safety hazard.

• our Lady Chapel to restore the medieval wall paintings and return it to its 17th century glory from underneath three centuries of grime;

• our ceilings to reveal their vividly painted surfaces and carvings of angels;

• the stonework to remove the dirt of centuries and show its true beauty;

• our seating by replacing pews with moveable oak benches, enhancing comfort and flexibility of use

• the lighting and electrical systems to make the interior better lit and highlight our stunning interior

• the heating and toilet facilities, to improve comfort and accessibility for all users

• the sound system;

• storage facilities to declutter the church.

Our aim is for St Thomas’s Church to grow as a major centre of city life for all members of the community, as a place of worship and a place where people can gather for a wide variety of activities in a building which is inspiring, welcoming, accessible and well-resourced.

What makes us wonderful?

We recognise the selfless commitment made by fundraisers who train for months to run marathons, face their fears by jumping out of aeroplanes or open their homes to the community for charity bakes and coffee mornings. We believe the charities they support should receive EVERY PENNY from their fundraising efforts.

We also believe that Gift Aid (a scheme enabling charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers) should be directed IN FULL to the charities. This is why the Wonderful Organisation does not generate profit (or even cover costs) by deducting money from fundraisers' sponsors or Gift Aid contributions.

We are a non-profit organisation funded entirely by like-minded, philanthropic businesses. That's what makes us wonderful!
